Turning 65
A new chapter.
Let’s make a clear start.
There’s a lot of Medicare mail out there. Let’s focus on the questions that matter to you.
Start with your timing
Your birthday is
a starting point.
For most people first eligible at 65, the Initial Enrollment Period is seven months: the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after.
Some people are enrolled automatically; others need to sign up. Check your circumstances early, especially if your birthday is on the first of the month or you qualify before 65.
Still working?
Employer coverage can affect when you should enroll. Before delaying Medicare or changing coverage, talk with your employer’s benefits administrator and check Medicare’s guidance for your situation.
A little preparation helps
Your first-conversation
checklist.
Keep this list for yourself and bring it to your conversation. No sign-up required.
Your timeline
When do you turn 65, plan to retire, or expect your current coverage to end?
Your current coverage
Note whether you have coverage through work, a spouse, or another source.
Your doctors and pharmacy
Make a list of the providers and pharmacy you want to keep using.
Your prescriptions
Have the names, dosages, and how often you take them ready for a private discussion.
Your priorities and questions
Think about your budget, travel, and anything you want explained.
Keep medical details and Medicare numbers out of a general introductory email.
A little guidance goes a long way
